Edwin Hollett was born in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland in 1949, and though he lives now in Centreville, Nova Scotia, he remains at heart true to Newfoundland.
This once unknown artist is now particularly noted for his marine paintings, such as the seas, and ships from the past. He is also known for his scenic paintings of small towns and seaside villages from throughout the Atlantic.
Ed has been featured in a number of exhibits, and now has the pleasure of opening his own Nova Scotia Art Gallery, in Wolfville, NS. Featuring original fine art, and located near other Nova Scotia art galleries, Edwins gallery is much like Edwin himself, a joy to be acquainted with. “Relaxing”, and “Tranquil” are words that come to mind. Even in his paintings showing the wrath of the sea, one can be calmed and feel a captivating respect for the power the winds and currents afford it.
Leave it as no surprise that when Edwin left Newfoundland he ended up in Nova Scotia, as many Newfoundlanders do, and even less a surprise considering the voice of his brush, that he ended up in a community like Halls Harbour, NS. The entire province of Nova Scotia has a rich heritage based upon its proximity to the sea, and Halls Harbour is no exception. Several of Edwins paintings are of this beautiful harbour village. Once bustling with trade, and the comings and goings of many a fishing vessel, it remains important as holding the claim to the highest tides in the world.
At an early age Edwin began to paint, having been inspired by his father who enjoyed building model ships. Starting with oils, he has taken to the use of acrylics, pastels, watercolours and some pen and ink.
With the opening of The Sea Mist Art Gallery a dream was realized. A love of the sea and tranquil scenes are now being shared with the world through the venue of a small and intimate art gallery.
